October 2011

YOU ARE INVITED TO A BIRTHDAY BASCH!!!!!!

On Sunday, October 23rd, I will be celebrating my 60th birthday, (Yes, that is right, my 60th birthday.) and I am inviting everyone in the Good Shepherd family to join in celebrating God’s blessings in my life.

The party will include some of my most favorite foods with my favorite people: Pizza from “Louisa’s”,  Hot Dogs and Beef sandwiches from “Pop’s”, Lemon Fluff Birthday Cake from Wolf’s Bakery, Root Beer Floats and Tootsie Roll Pops! Pastor Brandt will be with us to share the day and say a prayer for his “old” partner.  The festivities will begin immediately after the 11:00 AM service with a mile run as I, at the advanced age of 60, attempt to run a mile in under 10 minutes (in truth this has been a personal goal of mine for many years). The course has been set at five times around the church with the hope that you will be there to cheer me on.  Please no gifts for me but if you would like to take the challenge of pledging an amount for every second under ten minutes that would be great. All money that is raised will go to the Good Shepherd “Big Build” Project as our mission team plans on building a home for “Habitat for Humanity” right here next year.

Following the run there will be lunch with Birthday cake and candles. (Bring your torch!) No speeches, no ceremonies, no gifts!!!! Every effort will be made to finish by 1:30 PM to see the second half of the Bears game from London. Whether you choose to participate in the run or not please come and celebrate my birthday with me!

This party is for EVERYONE! I am especially hopeful that all the young people, especially in Sunday School and Confirmation will be there to share a fun moment with their Pastor. Most especially this is my way of saying thank you to all of you for your expressions of kindness, friendship, generosity, faith, hope and love in my life over the years.

If you would like to help with this celebration please contact the church office for more details. I really want this to be a fun time for all of us!!!!

                                                                 With Love and Gratitude,

                                                                 Pastor “Methuselah” Basch

====================================

I accept the challenge and pledge _____________ for every second under 10 minutes that Pastor Basch is able to run the mile on October 23rd.

Or:  I choose to make a flat donation to the Good Shepherd “Big Build” on the occasion of Pastor’s 60th Birthday in the amount of ______________.

All donations will be recorded with the church offerings and are of course tax deductible.

The New Program Year is Off to a GREAT Start! Thanks to a beautiful RALLY DAY filled with great fun and fellowship the new year is filled with the joy and promise of God’s love.  A huge thank you to the members of our Adult Activities Committee for their wonderful and well planned efforts, for the awesome dinner and picnic we enjoyed.  The church is revitalized at this time of year thanks to the renewed commitment of faith on the part of God’s people.  Come and share the spirit of God’s grace as we face the challenges of life together.

Our Choirs are back and we are thankful.  Their support of our worship has been missed.  We are especially thankful for the dedicated efforts of each chorister as they take their part in making a joyful noise to the Lord.  If you have ever thought of participating, now is a great time as our choirs prepare new music for the coming season and get ready for the coming holidays.  The Adult Choir, Flute Choir and Joy Ringers rehearse on Wednesday nights while the Bells practice on Thursday.  The Junior Choir practices on Monday evening. Our youngest choir, the Cherubs, practices on Sunday morning just before Sunday School.  All choirs welcome new participants!

Good Shepherd will be starting up a High School Choir that will be fun, challenging, yet not too time consuming!  The present plan is to meet 4 weeks in a row and sing at 2 services, take approximately 4 or 5 weeks off, and repeat! This means that we will probably be getting together for 3 "rounds" of singing during the school year with Round 1 starting mid-October, Round 2 in early January, and Round 3 in mid-March.  If you are interested in participating in this choir, please contact BJ Quigley at bjq542@yahoo.com.  You can also see Ron and he will get your information to BJ.

Mission Committee:  Food items donated to the Worth Food Pantry this past month helped to fill their inventory.  While donations of any kind of food items are always appreciated, specific needs for October include soup, canned juice, canned fruit, salad dressing, tuna, canned meats and baby food.  The Missions Committee encourages the continued enthusiastic support of the congregation.

REST Cooking is reaching out to those less fortunate!  The next date for cooking for the homeless is Tuesday, October 18th at 9:30 AM.

This year, flu and pneumonia shots will be available at Good Shepherd.  Nurses from Maxim Health Care will be in the Galilean Room on Sunday, October 16th, from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM to administer the shots.  The flu shot will cost $30.00 and the pneumonia shot is $60.00.  Although the flu shot is recom-mended every year, the pneumonia shot is recommended every five years after the age of 65.  Any one age 4 and over may receive the shot this year.  The shots are free for eligible Medicare Part B recipients when you present your card at the time of the vaccination.  Pre-registration is requested and will be available on the bulletin board and in the Narthex on Sundays.  If you are unable to attend the clinic at Good Shepherd, a number of health departments and pharmacies in the area are offering the vaccinations.

Fall means the return to school for children and adults alike! Our Tuesday groups resumed meeting September 20th and are looking forward to many meaningful discussions of faith in the days and weeks ahead.  The 9:30 AM Prayer Group is discussing Gospel In Life by Timothy Keller                                                                     while the 10:30 AM Bible Class continues their journey through the Book of Proverbs.

The 4:00 PM Discussion Group will be designating a new topic in the coming weeks. We are thankfull for the opportunity these groups provide for us to grow in faith and share God’s love with each other, and we invite others to come and join us.

The Thursday Evening Bible Discovery Group resumes on October 6th at 7:30 PM.  This group has become a close group of searchers sharing the gift of God’s Word.  Now is a great time to join and learn more about the Bible and meet some very nice people along the way.  The class will be preceded by prayer and devotion in the Sanctuary at 7:00 PM.  This opportunity to be still and know God’s love is open to everyone.

“Body and Soul”, our men’s group, continues to meet at 8:00 PM every Monday evening.  Discussion follows an hour of basketball every other week.  They are discussing John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.   Come and join this exciting group!  This group meets October 10th and 24th with basketball only on the 3rd, 17th and 31st
