Through the years, the month of May has become a special month in the worship life of our church family. With the glow of Easter still dawning, we celebrate the gift of God’s redemptive love and the budding of hope in Christian service. Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed, Alleluia!
The Worship of the Good Shepherd family for the month of May
May 2 . . . The First Communion of our Confirmands, as they join us at the table of the Lord and share Christ’s body and blood in celebration of the affirmation of their baptismal faith. We welcome 31 wonderful young adults into the communicant membership of our church family: William Joseph Bennett IV, Anthony Vincent Bergamo, Collin Matthew Crowl, Courtney Autumn Delulio, Tyler John Dundek, Sara Beth Fleming, Matthew Iver Hetzler, Melissa Marie Kelly, Kylie Christine Kratz, Zachary Alexander Krepps, Kelsey Marie Kretzer, Alexa Calyn Kruszynski, Molly Anne Ladewig, Jacob Nels Lange, Thomas Logan Lenz, Danielle Megan Little, Alexander Edward Meyer, Nicole Susan Nelson, Jessica Ruth Niemeier, Anthony LaMorte Puttkammer, Jordan Tyler Relyea, Zachary William Roper, Kelly Shannon Roth, Steven Andrew Schaade, Jr., Logan James Smith, Hannah Elizabeth Stevenson, Jordan Eric Thiel, Rebecca Ruth Thoss, Molly Lockwood Traverso, Roger Lee Wilson III, Madeleine Renee Wohl.
May 9 . . . Mother’s Day, a special day to offer thanks for the love of mothers and the beauty all women bring to our world. It is our joy that our Junior Choir under the direction of B.J. Quigley will be leading our worship with this year’s musical: “Table for Five . . . Thousand!” The story of God using humble people with modest gifts to bring about extraordinary acts of life and love. Come and share this beautiful day and joyful message with your church family.
May 16 . . . The Seventh Sunday of Easter, Appreciation Sunday, a special Sunday to celebrate and give thanks for the gifts of music. Be sure to express your gratitude to the members of our choirs for their gifts. Our choirs are preparing special gifts of praise and thanksgiving for this day.
May 23. . . The Day of Pentecost, a time to celebrate the gift of God’s Spirit in the life of the church. To help us in celebration, we are asking for donations of red geraniums ($3.50 each) to announce the arrival of God’s Spirit. Plants may be taken home after the 11:00 AM service. Geraniums, which are left, will be planted on the church grounds, as a visual reminder of the Spirit’s presence in the life of our congregation.
May 30 . . . Memorial Day weekend, we worship as citizens, mindful of what others have done to preserve freedom in our lives.
A friendly reminder! June marks the beginning of summer and with that a change in service hours. Services will begin at 8:30 and 10:00 AM on Sundays beginning June 6th and we will begin Monday evening Vespers at 7:30 PM on June 7th.
REST Cooking is reaching out to those less fortunate! The next date of REST cooking for the homeless is Tuesday, May 18th at 9:30 AM. We continue to take food to the Worth Food Pantry. The May request includes: skillet dinners, Jello, pudding, diapers, condiments (ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc.), canned tuna, baked beans and travel size toiletries.
Thank You’s . . . to all those who have helped to make our Holy Week services meaningful and inspiring. This especially includes our choirs for all their dedicated efforts. . . . to the Committee serving Easter Breakfast following the Sunrise Service which included: Monika Korallus, Gina Bastian, Nettie Botts, Cheryl Davidovitch and Helga Fuller. A special thank you also goes to Naples Bakery for their donation of sweet rolls and donuts. . . . all those who helped with our clean-up day on April 24th. The grounds are looking beautiful! . . . to all of our confirmation students who supported Operation Shoebox. Donations will be taken to the Orland Park VFW in early May. If you would still like to make a donation, please see Ron. Our Tuesday groups continue to look forward to many meaningful discussions of faith in the days and weeks ahead. The 9:30 AM Prayer Group is discussing Healing Where It Hurts, while the 10:30 AM Bible Class is studying the “Psalms”. The 4:00 PM Discussion Group continues to discuss The Shack.
Our Thursday evening class, “Discovering the Bible,” which meets at 7:30 PM with Prayer Partners at 7:00 PM is meeting the 6th, 13th and the 20th. Come and share the journey!
“Body and Soul,” the men’s group that includes time for recreation and reflection, has become a close group of support and friendship for men in our congregation. The group is open to anyone who wishes to participate in either activity and continues to meet every other Monday starting at 8:00 PM. The meeting dates in May are the 10th and 24th. Basketball only is on the 3rd and 17th. The group is currently discussing Manhood for Amateurs by Michael Chabon.
The “Spiritual Fitness” home study will meet at the home of Cheryl Morg Monday, May 17th at 7:15 PM. Come and join this friendly group of women who meet on the 3rd Monday of each month.
Bowling League Notes! The final night of bowling will be Saturday, May 1st at 4:00 PM and it will be position night. The bowling banquet will be a Candlelight Bowl on Friday, May 21st at 7:00 PM. Mark your calendars for a good time.
The Adult Volleyball crowd is always looking for new players. If interested in blowing off a little stress, getting some exercise and having a lot of fun, come and join us May 14th and the 28th at 7:30 PM in the Life Center. The May 19th meeting of the “OFF Club” will be Derby Day! We will have “Mint Juleps” and a delicious luncheon. Then we will watch the ponies run and “bet” on our favorites. Don’t for-get to wear your – prettiest - or wildest – hat in the true Derby form! Men too!
“OFF Club” will be going to Gaelic Park for lunch and entertainment on May 5th. Cost is $13.00 and guests are welcome. Call Nancy Westlund for reservations. Guests are invited to join on an “OFF Club” trip to Long Grove planned for June 2nd. We will bus to Long Grove, visit the Chocolate Factory, have lunch and have time to shop returning late afternoon. Members are $30.00, guests are $35.00. Contact Nancy Westlund.
Just a reminder that the Garage Sale is on April 30th from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM and May 1st from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Items can be dropped off on April 27th and 28th from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Help is needed on April 27th, 28th, and 29th from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM, on April 30th from 7:30AM – 4:00 PM, and on May 1st from 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM. Donations of Large Shopping Bags with handles would be appreciated.
There will be a High School Mission Trip Meeting on Sunday, May 2nd from 6:30 – 8:00 PM for all trip participants. This will be our last group meeting before our trip. Please let Ron know if you will be unable to attend this meeting.
Do you need a quick Graduation or Father’s Day gift? Or are you having a Memorial Day, Father’s Day, or Fourth of July barbeque? Whatever the occasion or function, purchase gift cards to give as gifts or to use for your everyday shopping and help VBS in the process. We will be selling gift cards from many retailers (including Jewel, Dominicks, Panera, Starbucks, Borders, as well as many others). You will pay the retail value for the gift card and VBS will get the percentage listed on the order form. You can use the order form included with this paper or get additional copies in the office. Please turn in all orders to Lori Puttkammer, Ron Skoglund or the church office. If you would like a gift card from a retailer not on the order form, see Ron. Cards can be ordered from many other retailers. Orders received by May 16th will be available for pickup on May 23rd. Orders received by June 6th will be available for pickup on June 13th. Family Fun. . . Let’s go for a walk! On May 7th, we will meet at church, enjoy a picnic dinner and then take a walk on the walking path behind our church. We will head southwest for about 30 minutes and then make the return back to church. If rain spoils our plans to walk, then we will play a game of kickball in the Family Life Center. Families will need to provide their own picnic dinner and plan to meet at church by 6:00 PM. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.
VBS has a wish list of items that would help with décor, crafting and general use. If you are able to donate any of the following items it would be greatly appreciated. You can bring the items to Lori Puttkammer’s office at any time. Items needed are: old magazines, washable glue sticks, Avery address labels-white, tissue paper-green (any shade), brown paper lunch bags-larger size, white paper plates-dinner size, paper clips, tubs of baby wipes, empty gallon WATER jugs with caps, and gift cards to Menards, Home Depot, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart and Target.
Vacation Bible School 2010. . . Baobab Blast! God’s Great Get-Together July 12th -16th Early registration is strongly recommended and will begin on Sunday, June 6th between the church services. This year we are offering the chance to PRE-REGISTER your children on May 2nd, 9th, and 16th between the services and following late service. The registration table will be in the old narthex by the staircase. If your plans are to join us for VBS this year, please consider taking advantage of the above pre-registration dates.
The success of our Vacation Bible School is largely dependent upon the volunteers that give so willingly of their time, talents and love. It’s a great blessing working alongside fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and having the opportunity to deepen the Christian faith of our children. Please consider joining us. We are looking for volunteers for: Day care room, teachers, classroom assistants, registration assistants, craft assistants, and those that are willing to help create scenery. The sign up sheets are on the bulletin board.
Summer Sunday School Volunteer Leaders needed!!! Summer Sunday school is provided during the 10:00 AM service beginning June 6th and continuing through August 29th. The children will enjoy a video presentation, coloring, a snack and a craft. For those that volunteer to teach/lead, all supplies are prepped and ready for you to guide our children through the Summer Sunday school experience. This is a great opportunity for Moms and Dads to get involved with their child at church. Volunteers may sign up for one Sunday or more as your schedule allows. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.
Greeters are always needed to set a welcoming tone to worship here at Good Shepherd. The sign-up sheet is across from Pastor’s office. Please stop by and sign-up soon. Thanks!
ASSISTANCE NEEDED . . . Will you please notify the church office if you have a daughter or son graduating from high school or college this year? If you have a college grad, we need to know his/her degree and the field in which he/she majored. With this information, we can list their names and congratulate them in our next paper. Please give this information to us by the 10th of May. Thank You!
