                                                   March, 2008

Holy Week, a solemn time of preparation for the joyful truth of Easter.  We fail to measure the joy of Easter if we have not first counted the cost of our Lord’s passion and the cross of Good Friday.  In the miracle of the Resurrection, the hope and love of God embraces us!  Prepare your hearts in the services of this special season.

PALM SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 9:00 AND 11:00 AM

The arrival in Jerusalem, the waving of the palms, the shouts of hosanna, the reading of the Passion narrative.

MAUNDY THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 7:30 PM

The Upper Room, the washing of feet, the giving of Christ in His Holy        Sacrament, the new commandment:  “Love One Another.”

GOOD FRIDAY, MARCH 21

Noonday worship at the time of our Lord’s crucifixion, prayer and meditation.  Tenebrae service in the evening at 7:30 PM, the Adult Choir’s presentation of Dubois’ “The Seven Last Words”.  The magnitude of God’s great love, piercing the void of the world’s despair.

          EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 23

          “CHRIST IS RISEN!  ALLELUIA!”

        Sunrise Service at 6:30 AM

The open tomb at early morning!

        Easter Breakfast at 8:00 AM

Rolls, Easter eggs, juice and coffee

Festival Worship at 9:00 and 11:00 AM

Joy reverberates through the house of God.

Holy Communion celebrated at all services.

“GOOD CHRISTIAN FRIENDS REJOICE AND SING!  NOW IS THE TRIUMPH OF OUR KING!  TO ALL THE WORLD GLAD NEWS WE BRING; ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA!”

AS HARD AS WE TRY . . . we make mistakes!  We regret that sometimes our efforts to communicate important events in the life of our members to other members of the congregation come up short for a whole variety of reasons.  This was abundantly clear over the disappointment a few members felt at not being able to attend a recent funeral.  We regret our failure to inform all interested members.  We are trying to do a better job and are working at a better computer network to improve our communications.  In order to do this we need the e-mail address of anyone who is interested in being on this list.  We do appreciate your understanding and forgiveness in the process.

In addition, a brief comment on the temperature in the sanctuary.  When the outside weather significantly drops, it becomes harder to keep the sanctuary at a constant, comfortable temperature.  We are learning however how to better prepare for such days.  We also appreciate your understanding as we try to make worship comfortable for everyone.

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Pastor Basch

The Wednesday evening Lenten Suppers continue on Wednesday, March 5th and 12th.  Dinner will be served promptly at 6:15 PM.  A free will offering will be collected to help support the High School Mission Trip in June.  Come out for a light supper and enjoy the friendship and fellowship of your fellow church members before attending the midweek Lenten Services.

We continue to take food to the Worth Food Pantry, because the need continues.  March  request includes:  cereal, canned fruit, canned vegetables, boxed potatoes, canned meats and juice.

The Annual Blood Drive will be held on Sunday, March 2nd.  You will be able to register for an appointment this Sunday in the narthex.  Or, if you don’t have a chance to sign up you  can always come in the morning of the 2nd and they will accommodate you.  If you have any questions, please contact the church office (708/448-4170).  Please consider taking some time to give the gift of blood, it’s a gift of life!

Our Tuesday groups are looking forward to many meaningful discussions of faith in the days and weeks ahead.  The 9:30 AM Prayer Group is discussing “A Disciple’s Joy” by Mike Foss.   The 10:30 AM Class is studying “Luke” and the 4:00 PM group is discussing “Women in the Bible”.  We are thankful for the opportunity these groups provide for us to grow in faith and share God’s love with each other, and we invite others to come and join us.

Dear Friends, Thank you for all your prayers, support and kindness during the saddest time of my life, the death of Helmut, my husband.  Your presence and love were greatly appreciated; it made a true difference.

                                                                                Love,

                                                                                Christa Habeck and Family

Come and meet “Lucky”, the world’s largest Leprechaun…and receive a bit o’ luck yourself!  Join the OFF Club on Wednesday, March 19th at 11:00 AM and enjoy your choice of a beef or corned beef sandwich plus chips, coffee & dessert for $6.50.  A short meeting will be followed by lunch and then we will hear from a representative from the South Suburban Crisis Center.  We have learned that their pantry is in dire need of paper products such as paper towels, tissues, bathroom tissue, etc., to be distributed to those in crisis situations.  Please bring what you can contribute.  Call Geri Brennan at (708) 448-1558 before Wednesday, March 12th, to reserve your choice of sand-wich.  Annual dues of $10 are also due at this time.

Looking for a great homemade dessert to take home?  To help raise funds for our trip to Taylorsville, North Carolina in June, the High School Mission Trip participants are hosting a spaghetti dinner and dessert auction immediately following the 11:00 AM service on Sun-day, April 6th.  There will be a free will offering for the dinner.  At approximately 12:45 PM, we will begin the dessert auction.  For those of you who haven’t attended a dessert auction before, it is an entertaining and fun way to bid on homemade desserts for you to take home and share with your family.  Please come and enjoy an afternoon of good food and fellowship while supporting the youth of our church.  Bakers are needed to provide the desserts for the auction.  If you would be willing to provide a dessert for the auction, please sign up on the bulletin board or see Ron.
