EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD 7800 W. McCarthy Rd. Palos Heights, IL 60463 Rev. Dr. Wayne A. Basch, Pastor (708-448-4170) July/August 2009
Join us at Discovery Canyon!!! It’s time to register for Vacation Bible School! July 13th – 17th 9:00 AM – Noon
C’mon…Let’s discover the wonders of the Word together! All those age 3 (by July 12th and potty-trained) through just “completed” 5th graders are welcome to journey with us! While at Discovery Canyon, kids will learn great stories about Jesus, Moses and Hannah, make a cool craft, sing fun songs, play awesome games, eat yummy snacks and make a canyon full of friends!
This year’s VBS service project will benefit Worth Food Pantry. We will be collecting non-perishable food items. Pantries all over have experienced higher numbers of families coming to them for help. We will do our best to help them fill up their shelves. Collection will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of our VBS week.
A great BIG HUG and THANK YOU to everyone who has already made a contribution to VBS!! We appreciate your generosity. These donations help aid in our ministry not only to our children, but also to those throughout the community.
We’re taking VBS Registrations for all children between the ages of 3 (potty-trained) and those who have completed 5th grade. Register your child for the grade they have just completed. Please try to pre-register your children and their friends before July 13th. For a $10 fee they will receive a color coordinated t-shirt and a pouch with daily trading cards. Registration is highly encouraged on Sunday mornings. You may also register during the week on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 AM - 12 Noon.
Vacation Bible School needs help gathering the following items: Cardboard boxes (any size), washable glue sticks, rolls of brown mailing paper, rolls of twine, baking parchment paper, cinnamon sugar, all-purpose flour, and gift cards to Menards, Home Depot, Michaels Craft, Hobby Lobby crafts, Walmart or Target. We have a wish list for snacks. You are able to view that list and sign up for items to donate in Mrs. Lori’s office. Please feel free to stop by or call and we can let you know what is still needed.
Help! We are still looking for some VBS volunteers. There is a need for more classroom assistants, day care assistants, and registration assistants. (Registration assistants only need to help on Monday and Tuesday of that week.) If you are interested, please see Lori Puttkammer as soon as possible.
REST Cooking is reaching out to those less fortunate! The next two dates of REST cooking for the homeless are July 21st and August 18th at 9:30 AM. The response for donations of trial/travel size items of men and women toiletries has been great. We continue to take food to the Worth Food Pantry. The July request includes: baby food, diapers (ongoing critical need), rice and noodle mixes/dinners, canned meats, cake mixes and frosting. The August request includes: peanut butter, bottled juice, canned meats, canned fruit, canned vegetables, baby food and of course diapers. The need continues and donations of any other items are always appreciated. Summer Worship Hours . . .YES, it can be a bit confusing, but many people have expressed their appreciation for the earlier hours of summer worship. It gives many a chance to get off to an earlier start and still worship, and helps the church save on energy costs. Our worship hours will remain at 8:30 and 10:00 AM through Labor Day. On Rally Day which is September 13th, we will return to our usual worship hours of 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Please remember that we have Summer Vespers every Monday at 7:30 PM. Come and share in our praise and worship of the God of all seasons. A Very Special Anniversary! On July 12th Pastor Brandt will celebrate 65 years in the ordained ministry. Be sure to join us as we thank God for this very special blessing and offer your words of gratitude and joy. The City of Palos Heights is celebrating the 50th year of its incorporating, with an Ecumenical Service on Sunday, July 5th at 3:00 PM at the Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College. Pastor Basch is participating on behalf of Good Shepherd and welcomes anyone who wants to join him that afternoon as we celebrate the community which God has blessed us and our bond with the churches of Palos Heights. The Deacon District Picnics are continu-ing! The picnics are continuing next week at the parsonage. The last two dates are Tuesday, June 30th and Wednesday, July 1st. Picnics are potluck, with us providing hamburgers and hot dogs and they begin at 6:30 PM. Water Balloon participation is optional! Come and relax and have fun and friendship with your church family. Are you in need of a helping hand? Good Shepherd’s “Helping Hands” is here for you! If you could use a hand on a job you just can’t get done, just call the church office 708/448-4170 or see Pastor Basch and your church family will come to help. The “Body and Soul” men’s group will continue meeting every week this summer for basketball only. They will resume their “soulful” discussions in the fall. They will not meet on July 13th as Vacation Bible School occupies the Family Life Center. The next meeting of the OFF (Over Fifty-Five) Club will be ONE WEEK LATER THAN USUAL. We will gather for our annual picnic on Wednesday, July 22nd, in Bethany Hall. The Club will provide chicken and members are asked to bring a salad or dessert. Call Geri Brennan to tell her what you are bringing or find out what is needed. We will be entertained by a fine illusionist, Blake Alexander. Still in his teens, Blake is a seasoned performer, having amazed audiences at corporate and business events and recently taped a segment for the Ellen DeGeneres TV show. We look forward to his talented presentation. Cost will be $5.00 per person. Guests are welcome but a phone call to reserve a place will be appreciated. Easy Yoga . . . Classes continue in July and August. Sandi Wagner is offering yoga classes on Tuesday evenings, 5:15 - 6:15 PM. There is no charge and all adults are welcome to come out and enjoy this relaxing hour of gentle stretching to soothing music. Please bring a "sticky" yoga mat or beach towel. If you have any questions, give Sandi a call. The Palos Heights Beautification Com-mittee is sponsoring a Classic Car Event on Thursday, July 16th from 6:00 – 9:00 PM between 122nd and 124th Streets on Harlem Avenue. This is the 6th year that Good Shepherd will be running one of the vendor booths for this event. Volunteers will be needed to assist with the booth from 5:15 – 9:15 PM. If you would be interested in helping, please call the church office or see Ron Skoglund. This is a way for us as a congregation to support Palos Heights. All proceeds from our booth will be used to support our service men and women in the Middle East. There will be a parent and participant meeting for everyone attending the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans on Sunday, July 19th from 11:00 – 11:45 AM in the Galilean Room. If you will not be able to attend this meeting, please make arrangements to meet with Ron individually. This meeting is very important because we will be relaying information about the Gathering, ensuring that all forms are completed, and coordinating our travel schedule to and from the airport. If you have any questions, please call Ron. One of Good Shepherd’s very own is featured in a recent interview titled “Global Warming vs. Climate change”. This interview is led by Dick Janzow and is currently being aired on Comcast Channel 4. Dick encourages everyone to look in on this interview and he welcomes your responses as we all take interest in our environment. “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is being presented by the Opening Night Arts Group at the Dorothy Menker Theater at Moraine Valley Community College on July 17th, 18th and 19th. This charitable organization raises funds for several worthwhile causes and includes several stars from the Good Shepherd family, including Jennifer Miller, Betty Jane Quigley, Kelly Kretzer and Kristie Traverso. Come on out, support a good cause and enjoy a wonderful play. Tickets can be purchased by calling 708/974-5500. Swedish Exchange student looking for a home. Fellow member Bev Bjerke has a friend looking for a home for a 17 year old young man from Sweden who is looking for a learning experience here in the United States.
